Book of Hours for Sarum Use and Gallican Psalter with Canticles
(Pembroke Hours)
Flanders, probably Bruges, c. 1465-70
The Master of Anthony of Burgundy
Esdras
Renewing the Law. Psalm
1 in this combined Book of Hours and Psalter is illustrated with
an unusual scene of Esdras (Ezra), an Old Testament priest, rewriting
the law of the Lord after it was burned by his enemies. Seated in
a room filled with books and scrolls and wearing eyeglasses, Esdras
bends over his labors while a pile of burning books in the foreground
suggests part of the narrative. The Pembroke Hours is one of the
largest and most elaborately illustrated books of private devotion
produced in the Low Countries in the fifteenth century.
