Gallican Psalter with Calendar, Canticles, Litany, and Collects
Flanders, c. 1470
David
Playing the Bells. Inside
a paneled, fifteenth-century room, King David plays bells while
behind him a harp rests against a stool and two viols hang on either
side of a mirror. Through the doorway may be seen a city and God,
the figure for whom David plays, in a cloud. The border contains
two wild men grappling among the brown, vinelike tendrils.
