Gallican Psalter with Calendar, Canticles, Litany, and Collects Flanders, c. 1470 King David in the Watery Deep. Psalters were still being created for lay patrons well into the fifteenth century, although Books of Hours superseded their popularity in the early fourteenth century. This large-format Psalter was made in Flanders for an English patron. The miniature before Psalm 68 depicts David standing in a lake, illustrating verse 1 of the psalm, "Save me, O God: for the waters are come in even unto my soul." Two young men mock him, referring to verse 13, "They that drank wine made me their song." The Free Library of Philadelphia, Rare Book Department, Lewis E 182, fol. 65 |
