Gallican Psalter with Canticles, Litany, and Office of the Dead
Flanders, c. 1270
Historiated
Initial D with a Saint before an Altar. A
saint points to his eye inside the letter D in this small
Flemish Psalter. By indicating that he is illuminated by the Lord,
he illustrates the first verse of Psalm 26, "The Lord is my
light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?" This Psalter is
typical of ones made for wealthy lay patrons in prosperous cities
in Flanders.
