Missal for Rome Use
Southern Netherlands, possibly Hainault, c. 1530–50
Historiated Initial S with Saint
Martin of Tours. Saint
Martin of Tours lived in the fourth century and was considered a
model of charity because he once shared his cloak with a beggar.
This initial S marking the feast for Saint Martin on November
11 shows the saint about to slice his red cloak in half with a sword
while a man with a wooden leg stands beside him.
