Missal for Rome Use
Southern Netherlands, possibly Hainault, c. 1530–50
Historiated Initial G with the Virgin
and Her Symbols. A
historiated initial marks the Feast of the Conception of the Virgin
in this missal. Inside the letter G, the Virgin stands with
her hands clasped in prayer, surrounded by her symbols, including
a fountain, the City of God, lilies, and a gated garden. Each symbol
is identified by a banderole (scroll).
