Nova Statuta, to the eighth year of Edward IV
England, probably London, c. 1470
Historiated
Initial E with King Edward IV and His Court. An
English lawyer might have owned an illuminated law book such as
this one that contains the statutes of the English kings up to the
eighth year of Edward IV's reign. Here the initial letter E,
for Edwardus, shows King Edward IV seated on a throne surrounded
by his advisors. To the right, the figures wear ermine collars and
gowns with stripes on the sleeve, clothing appropriate for lawyers.
The border with its feathery sprays and pinecone and pumpkin-like
motifs was executed by a popular, though anonymous, London artist.
