Lilium medicinae by Bernard de Gordon Southern England, 1348 Initial A and Border with Winged Beast. The modest decoration in this manuscript is appropriate to its function as a physician's handbook. Called the "lily of medicine," the text was written in about 1303 by Bernard de Gordon, a teacher of medicine at the University of Montpellier in France. This portion of the book, opened by a beast with an orange tongue and a tail that frames the text, describes illnesses of the head.
