Le Pèlerinage de la vie humaine by Guillaume de Deguileville France, Angers, 1437 Illuminators at the court of Angers Grace Dieu Shows Pilgrim the Eye Crying Tears of Penitence into a Barrel. On his journey, Pilgrim is led by a daughter of God named "Grace Dieu," who introduces him to many virtues. Here she points out an eye attached to a mountainous rock. The eye cries tears of penitence that are collected in a barrel in which Pilgrim later bathes. Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, MS 241/2, fol. 68v
