Le Pèlerinage de la vie humaine by Guillaume de Deguileville France, Angers, 1437 Illuminators at the court of Angers The Pilgrim Arriving at the Sea of the World. This popular moralizing tale, The Pilgrimage of Human Life, contains more than 280 illustrations. The pen-and-wash miniatures tell the story of Pilgrim, the hero of the book, on his journey through hell and purgatory. Pilgrim, dressed in a brown gown and carrying a staff and a black bag, arrives at the Sea of the World where angels swim in the waters. Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, MS 241/2, fol. 69v
