La Voie de Povreté ou de Richesse (Le Livre du Chastel
de Labour) by Jacques Bruyant
France, Paris or possibly Rouen, c. 1430–40
The Workshop of the Bedford Master
The Author Joins Other Laborers in the
Castle of Work. This
miniature is part of a moralizing story called Le Livre du Chastel
de Labour (The Book of the Castle of Work), in which a newlywed
man has a dream that teaches him the value of labor. He visits the
Castle of Work, seen here, where several men use saws, mallets,
and a level to build the castle. In the margin, four additional
figures are engaged in work appropriate to the four seasons: planting
seeds (spring), harvesting wheat (summer), pruning (winter), and
gathering grapes (fall). The book was owned by the Beuville family
of Normandy. Their emblem, a crenellated wall with a gate, appears
in the lower margin. (Also featured on the CD-ROM.)
