Book of Hours for Rome Use
France, Provence, probably Carpentras, c. 1450
Annunciation.
Behind
a houselike prayer stool, the Virgin raises her arms in surprise
as the angel Gabriel kneels on the left and God the Father is seen
in a star-filled arch behind. The flat, decorative quality of the
painting in this Book of Hours is heightened by the church architecture
in the background and the sinuous scroll that encircles a vase of
lilies in the foreground. The border is composed of floral forms
and tiny, brown beasts.

husband, 1945-65-8, fol. 13
