Book
of Hours for Sarum Use
Belgium, Bruges, 1460–70
Binding
and Clasps. This
binding is "blind tooled," meaning that the leather has been impressed
or stamped without any intervening gold or metal leaf. Between the
vertical panels containing birds and vines are bands of dancing
peasants and musician angels. A Flemish bookbinder named Anthony
de Gavere created the binding and added this inscription: "I, Anthony
de Gavere, properly bound this book for the glory of Christ." The
Virgin and Child are entertained by an angel on the illumination
inside the upper clasp.Within
the lower clasp is an illumination of Veronica holding a veil on
which Christ's face is imprinted.
