Book of Hours for Sarum Use Belgium, Bruges, 1460–70 The Martyrdom of Saint Thomas à Becket. This lavish Book of Hours was made in Bruges for the English wool merchant John Browne and his wife Agnes. This miniature depicts knights of King Henry II murdering the English archbishop Thomas à Becket. The text accompanying the miniature was crossed out on the order of King Henry VIII of England, who officially banned devotion to Becket in 1538.
