Book of Hours for Paris Use
France, Paris, c. 1415-20
The Master of the Mazarin Hours, active c. 1408 to 1420
Virgin and Child Entertained by Angels.
Two
special prayers to the Virgin Mary are found in Books of Hours.
One begins "O intemerata" (O immaculate Virgin)
and addresses the Virgin directly, seeking her aid. In this French
Book of Hours, the prayer is illustrated with a delightful scene
of the Virgin and Child entertained by angels who play peek-a-boo.
The border is decorated with floral motifs in bright green, orange,
and blue paint.
