Book of Hours for Dominican Use
Italy, Siena, c. 1470
Liberale da Verona, 1445–1527/29
King David in Penance. The
Renaissance artist Liberale da Verona illuminated this Italian Book
of Hours. The miniature of David kneeling in penance introduces
the Seven Penitential Psalms, which were recited in an effort to
avoid the temptations of the Seven Deadly Sins. An inscription in
the manuscript indicates that it was owned by Artemesia Piccolomini,
a nun and relative of Pope Pius II Piccolomini (reigned 1458–64).
