Book of Hours for Sarum Use (Mostyn Hours)
England, probably London, c. 1470
Probably Illustrator B of Fitzwilliam Museum 56
Christ Carrying the Cross. This
Book of Hours illustrates the midday hour of Sext (about noon) with
a miniature of Christ Carrying the Cross, an event from the end
of Christ's life rather than from his Infancy. English Books of
Hours often decorated the Hours of the Virgin with scenes from the
Passion (the last days of Christ's life). Few Books of Hours belonging
to English owners survive since many religious manuscripts were
destroyed in the sixteenth century on orders from King Henry VIII
and the Church of England.
