Book of Hours for Paris Use
France, probably Brittany, c. 1425
Willem Vrelant, active 1449 to 1481
Flight into Egypt. Interspersed
among the colored miniatures of this Book of Hours is a series of
pictures that are painted in gray with gold highlights. Called "grisaille"
miniatures after gris, the French word for gray, they were
painted by Willem Vrelant in Bruges about 1470. They were probably
inserted by a nineteenth-century dealer seeking to spruce up the
book.
