Book of Hours for Rouen Use
France, Rouen, c. 1470
The Workshop of the Master of the Échevinage de Rouen
Annunciation. The
hour of Matins (said at midnight or upon rising) is decorated with
a miniature of the Annunciation in which the angel Gabriel visits
the Virgin Mary in a sumptuous, ecclesiastical interior. The gold
border surrounding the miniature contains animals, drolleries (humorous
figures), and objects, like the tiered fountain, commonly found
in the margins of books illuminated by Rouennaise artists.

Library Company of Philadelphia, MS 5, fol. 28
