Bible
Northern France, probably Paris, c. 1250–60
Historiated Initial I with the Seven
Days of Creation and the Crucifixion. Extending
the entire length of the page, this initial I that begins
the Book of Genesis has seven compartments showing the days of Creation.
On the sixth day God creates Adam and Eve; on the seventh day he
rests, holding a book. A miniature of the Crucifixion hangs from
the base of the letter, linking the events of the Old Testament
to the New Testament.
