Bible with Missal
France, Paris, c. 1220–40
Historiated Initial I with the Fall of Man, Noah's Ark, and
the Sacrifice of Isaac. The
Book of Genesis in this Bible begins with a full-page initial I,
decorated with three small, narrative roundels and four sinuous
dragons. The roundels contain scenes of Adam and Eve with the serpent,
Noah's Ark, and the Sacrifice of Isaac. The text is written in very
small script so that the Bible would fit into one easily portable
volume.
