About PACSCL
The Philadelphia Area
Consortium of Special Collections Libraries consists of twenty-one
members, including the nation's oldest lending library, founded by Benjamin
Franklin in 1738, as well as libraries affiliated with some of the nation's
most prestigious colleges, universities, and museums. PACSCL member libraries
hold rich collections of materials on United States and world history;
the natural and social sciences; literature and religion; business and
industry; and art and architecture.
The special collections
of Philadelphia libraries include more than 500 bound illuminated manuscripts
and approximately 2,000 leaves and cuttings removed from dismembered or
plundered manuscripts. The works in this exhibition are taken from those
holdings and display the broad extent of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts
in Philadelphia area institutions. The books, leaves, and cuttings included
in this exhibition were selected primarily on the basis of artistic quality,
but also by type (religious and secular), place of origin (countries of
Western Europe), and date (1150–1560). The manuscripts were selected from
the collections of nine members of PACSCL and two other area institutions.
